What is the Internet of Things or IoT?

Internet of Things, or IoT, is describes as a network of physical object which embedded with sensors, software, actuators and computer devices that collect and exchange data through the internet. IoT devices are basically referring to any physical object that can be connected to the internet to be able to interact with another IoT devices by transferring data over a network.

The most common thing is smartphones, but there is other endless array of devices which are IoT devices. Usually physical devices that wouldn’t be expected to have an internet connection like home appliances, such as light bulb, lamps, coffee makers, laundry machines, etc. Smartphones and fitness bands are included as IoT devices as well. Basically, Internet of Things is born with an idea of adding sensors and intelligence to basic objects. The increasing demand of convenience in our everyday lives what drives the increase of Internet of Things.

Although it does help us communicate and interact with people easier, IoT privacy become something we should be aware of. Have you ever cover your laptop’s camera or see someone does that? Well, few years ago I do cover my laptop’s camera when my teacher suggested me to do so. And that was back when I was still in middle school when iPhone 6s just released. Even recently, I still cover my laptop’s camera until when the sticker note has fall off. I just realized that covering laptop’s camera is a thing that Apple made a blog about it. Apple actually warned not to cover camera on Macbook, Macbook Air, or Macbook Pro. Click here if you’re wondering why and should you be covering your Mac.

It’s overwhelming to think how people able to see us through our laptop’s camera even if the camera’s light isn’t on. Security and privacy become a second nature to a part of our daily life. Can you imagine how are we’re going to protect our information in our IoT devices in the future?

How Internet of Things Impacts Digital Marketing?

That being said, with so much data that can be collect and transfer without human-to-human interactions or human-to-computer interactions, this becomes a huge opportunity for marketers to use as digital marketing strategy. Marketers should always stay ahead of the ‘consumer’ curve and recognize trend before they trend. With this in mind, we can use IoT to gather data and analyze the information then we’ll be able to predict consumer behaviors and preferences. These are impacts of how IoT will impact digital marketing strategy:

1. Advertising opportunities

Any devices that are connected to the internet can be used as a channel to engage customers.

2. Personalization

IoT devices gives a superior way to deliver personalized messages and personalized marketing experience to prospects and customers, this include targeted email campaigns, custom videos, product recommendations and push notifications.

3. Data availability

Adoption of IoT devices keeps on growing which makes data generated by IoT devices will improve with it. With the immense amount of data collected by IoT devices, this allows marketers to find out hidden tastes, preferences and behavior traits of their users.

4. Improved engagement

IoT help marketers to understand their audience to show extremely relevant ads to their audience.
